Optimizing your product titles is one of the best ways to improve your listings on Amazon. Good titles make your products more likely to appear in the search results and can inspire customers to click on your listings.
When creating product titles for a marketplace catalog, a one-size-fits-all approach does not work. Products in different categories should have different information in the titles. For example, product titles for jewelry shouldn't follow the same structure as titles for pet food. Feedonomics helps merchants optimize their product catalogs for Amazon, ensuring that the titles and other attributes follow best practices for each product category on the marketplace.
At the bottom of this article, we have included several examples of good titles for every major product category on Amazon. Before we get to the examples, let’s take a look at the best practices and requirements for Amazon product titles.
Amazon provides general guidelines for merchants to apply to their product titles.
The basic title structure starts with the brand, followed by the product model or name, followed by any relevant product nouns. Parent product titles should not include additional variation information, such as color. Variation details should only go in the child product titles.
Here are two Amazon title examples:

Amazon’s main tip for titles is to include enough information for a shopper to make the purchase based on the product title alone. Of course, most customers look at the full product listing and not only the title, but a good product title is key to creating a positive first impression.
Amazon has specific title requirements, and while enforcement of them is inconsistent, merchants who get away with ignoring Amazon's requirements at first may eventually have their entire product catalog disapproved and unlisted. It’s best to follow these rules when you first upload your catalog to the marketplace.
Do not include promotional phrases in your titles, like “best on the market” or “free shipping.”
Don’t get cute with decorative characters, such as (ᵔᴥᵔ) or !!!.
Follow the character length limit for your product category (spaces count).
Include product nouns such as “basketball shoe” or “night light.”
Amazon also provides some additional tips for titles, which we’ve condensed here:
Keep titles as concise as possible.
Use title casing.
Abbreviate measurements.
Don’t include the merchant name in the title (including your brand is OK).
Use numerals.
Feedonomics makes every effort to stay up-to-date on changing channel requirements and follow the best practices for every marketplace, but there are times when the best practices are open-ended, vague, or seem to conflict with other information found on the site. Our feed specialists work closely with merchants to help them optimize their product listings in accordance with channel requirements whenever possible.
Required and recommended title lengths are not clearly delineated on Amazon. The inventory templates and the style guides don’t always match up, and it’s not unusual to find best sellers on Amazon that have longer titles than the recommended lengths. With that said, our team has found that titles shorter than 150 characters typically perform the best.
Use title casing, abbreviate measurements, and include the design or adjectives that help shoppers understand what you’re selling. For example, if you’re selling a reversible blanket, include the size measurements and the material, but also make sure to note that it’s reversible in the title! That could influence a shopper’s decision, and would also surface the blanket in search results for “reversible blanket.”
You don’t need to completely overload your titles with information. Remember that you should use bullet points and descriptions to go into more detail about your product. An Amazon product listing title that is too many characters in length can look spammy and unprofessional, and erode trust in your listings.
Amazon expects merchants to put their brand name at the front of their titles. In general, this is the best way to go, especially for well-known brands. However, some major brands choose to put their brand name more toward the middle of the product title. For example, Huggies and Pampers start their titles with the size of their baby diapers and the count per package before displaying the brand name. There’s nothing wrong with doing this, and Amazon states that it won’t suppress listings without a brand name at the beginning of the titles. Note that putting your brand name at the front can help increase your brand recognition. Consider running some A/B tests to help you decide.
